Hello lovely readers! Come make homemade butter with me!
It's been a while, I'm sorry. Life happens when kids become little adults. None the less, I am here today because I did something for myself. Strangely I really enjoyed it, I don't usually enjoy the kitchen but this butter making story was like visiting a therapist. That's why I have to share it with you.
Making homemade butter! Yes, you heard that right—fresh, creamy, delicious butter made from scratch. And the best part? It only took two simple ingredients and 40 minutes of my time. If I can do it, so can you!
The Ingredients
For this delightful culinary experiment, I used:
1 litre of fresh full cream
A pinch of salt
That’s it! Just two ingredients. No preservatives, no additives—just pure, wholesome goodness.
The Process
I pulled out my trusty electric Smeg mixer, which I must say, is an absolute gem in the kitchen. Here’s how the magic unfolded:
Pour the Cream: I started by pouring the full cream into the mixing bowl. The fresh cream had a rich, velvety texture that promised good things to come.
Mix, Mix, Mix: I set my Smeg mixer to a medium-high speed and let it work its magic. As the cream whipped, it first turned into whipped cream (perfect for a quick dessert topping!). But I wasn’t stopping there.
The Transformation: After about 10 minutes, the cream began to change. The butterfat separated from the buttermilk, forming clumps of butter. It was like watching a science experiment in real-time! Or in the life of a teenage mom, free therapy. (ha-ha-ha)
Strain and Rinse: Once the butter and buttermilk separated, I strained the mixture, saving the buttermilk for future baking (no waste here!). Then, I rinsed the butter under cold water to remove any remaining buttermilk, ensuring my butter would stay fresh longer.
Add Salt: Finally, I kneaded a pinch of salt into the butter. This step is optional, but it added a lovely hint of flavour.
And voilà! In just 40 minutes, I had a batch of fresh, homemade butter ready to spread on warm bread or melt over hot vegetables.
Why Homemade?
Making things fresh at home, like this butter, brings a sense of accomplishment and joy that store-bought items just can’t match. Here are a few reasons why you might want to give it a try:
Healthier Ingredients: You know exactly what’s in your food—no hidden preservatives or artificial ingredients.
Better Taste: Freshly made butter has a rich, creamy flavor that’s simply unbeatable.
Sustainability: By making your own, you reduce packaging waste and support local dairy farmers.
Mindfulness: There’s something incredibly satisfying about making food (or anything from scratch for that matter) with your own hands. It’s a form of self-care that nurtures both body and soul.
I know we all have busy lives, and it can be daunting to think about adding more tasks to our already full plates. But starting with one simple thing, like homemade butter, can open the door to more homemade delights.
Today it’s butter, tomorrow it might be homemade bread or fresh pasta. Each small step brings you closer to a more wholesome, mindful way of living.
So why not give it a try? Trust me, once you taste that fresh, homemade butter, you’ll be hooked!
Happy butter-making!
Always with Love
Maris
